Clayton State men set two team records at Emory Invitational

ATLANTA – March 23-24, 2012 – Like their female counterparts, the Clayton State Laker men's track and field team was just as productive on Saturday at the Emory Classic. The Lakers set two team records and recorded seven Top 10 finishes in the two-day event.

Clayton State recorded five Top 10 finishes in individual events, and the other two in the relays. For the second straight week, sophomore Russell Lawless excelled in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He finished third overall with a time of 9:49.27, setting a Clayton State team record in the event. Also, the Laker 4x800-meter team of Ricky Fort, Ayrton Azcue, Shelby Russell and Charles Anderson finished third with a school-record time of 7:49.54.

Clayton State also had a strong outing in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Russell, Anderson, Fort and Edlin Veras finished second in 3:20.36. The Lakers had three Top 10 finishes in the 1,500-meter run with Azcue finishing fourth in 3:59.31, Anderson placing seventh in 4:00.92 and Lawless finished ninth in personal-best time of 4:02.92.

Finally, senior Albert Mong'ony finished fifth overall in 5,000-meter run in 15:31.64.

Clayton State returns to Emory next weekend (March 30-31) for the Emory Classic.
