Relay teams shine for Clayton State men at DII Team Challenge

GENEVA, Ohio – February 4, 2012 – The Clayton State Laker men's track and field team turned it some strong performances from both its individuals and relay teams on Saturday at the DII Team Challenge at Lake Erie.

The Clayton State relay teams turned in the highlight performances of the meet. The Distance Medley Relay team of Charles Anderson, Edlin Veras, Shelby Russell and Ayrton Azcue finished second overall in a school-record team of 10:15.47, blasting the previous mark by more than 15 seconds. In addition, the Laker 4x400-meter relay team of Veras, Russell, Azcue and Ricky Fort placed sixth overall in 3:19.89 – just four seconds off the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark.

Anderson set a school record of 1:56.08 in the 800-meter run in placing 12th overall, while Fort placed 15th in a personal-best time of 1:57.54. In the mile run, senior Albert Mong'ony placed 17th in 4:26.12, and Russell Lawless placed 25th in 4:31.46. Mong'ony also placed 23rd in the 3,000-meter run in 9:04.13, while freshman Alex Foss placed 18th in the 5,000-meter run in 16:15.50 – his collegiate debut in the event.

Clayton State's final regular season meet of the 2012 indoor season is next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10-11) in the Tiger Paw Invite at Clemson.
