Clayton State men set three team records at Orange and Purple Winter Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. - December 3, 2011 - Competing in its first pre-Christmas indoor meet since 2006, the Clayton State Laker men's track and field team opened its indoor season with a lot promise and potential on Saturday at the Orange and Purple Winter Classic.

The Lakers set three team records and recorded four Top 10 finishes in the initial meet. The most notable was the second-place performances of junior Ayrton Azcue and senior Albert Mong'ony in their respective events.

Azcue placed second in the 1,000-meter run in a Clayton State record time of 2:36.58. He better the previous team mark by six seconds. Mong'ony finished second in the mile run in 4:29.90. Mong'ony actually led virtually the entire race until the final 100 meters.

Charles Anderson placed sixth in the 1,000-meter run in 2:39.79, while the Clayton State 4x400-meter relay team of Anderson, Edlin Veras, Shelby Russell and Ricky Fort finished fourth overall in 3:27.73. Veras also set a team record in the 500-meter dash, placing 11th in 1:06.90. Freshman Devon Lawson had a impressive Laker debut with a school record in the 300-meter dash, finishing 16th in 37.21 seconds.

Clayton State is off for the holiday break, and the Lakers return to action at the Gator Invite at Florida on Jan. 22.
