Evans scores late goal to lift Lakers to 1-0 victory

Morrow, GA – With less than two minutes remaining Saturday, freshman midfielder Jonny Evans scored a dramatic game-winning goal to lift the Lakers to a 1-0 win over Peach Belt Conference rival USC Aiken.

Evans scored the lone goal of the match in the final seconds after sophomore midfielder Elliott Prost gently chipped a ball at the top of box over the defense, setting up a shot from point blank range for Evans. The goal for Evans was his second on the year and Prost's third assist of the season.

"We are putting two halves together more consistently," said head coach Pete Peterson. "We needed this win to guarantee a spot in the Peach Belt tournament. And although slotted for a road game, I don't think a higher seed wants to see this bunch. Proud of the youngsters."

With the win, the Lakers improve to 6-7-1 and 2-5-1 in Peach Belt Conference play. Clayton State will close its regular season on Wednesday, hosting conference opponent Young Harris for Senior Night at 7:30 p.m.

Clayton State controlled the match, outshooting the Pacers 24-6 in the match. Keeper Sean Merfeld finished with two saves and recorded his four shutout of the year.
