Lakers blank Tusculum 3-0 behind two goals from Junuzovic
Morrow, GA – With two goals from Clayton State forward Ado Junuzovic, the Clayton State men's soccer team got back on the winning track in a big way Wednesday, blanking non-conference foe Tusculum 3-0 at Laker Field.
The Lakers controlled the match from the opening kick, snapping a three-game losing streak for the club. The win improves Clayton State to 4-5 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 4-5-2. The Lakers will go for two in a row Saturday, facing an old Peach Belt rival in Lander. Kickoff for the match at Laker Field will be 1 p.m.
"The fellas needed a win, style points or not, to get back in the saddle and get some momentum into this weekend game with Lander," said head coach Pete Petersen.
The Lakers jumped out to 1-0 lead 21 minutes into Wednesday's match, as Junuzovic found the back of the net with a shot from 10 yards out off a pass from midfielder Jonny Evans.
Despite controlling much of play, the match remained scoreless for the next 40 minutes until Clayton State struck for two quick goals in the middle of the second half.
Forward Alhagi Toure gave the squad a 2-0 lead in the 65th minute off a double assist from midfielder Elliot Prost and defender Donal Roughneen. Prost sent a pass across the endline, followed by Roughneen flicking the ball right to Toure for a shot at point blank range.
Junuzovic scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season and gave the squad some insurance in the 77th minute off a pass from midfielder Nomis Cisic.
Tusculum played a man down for the final 30 minutes of the match after Pioneer keeper Andy Goellner was cited with a red card for a collision in the box with a Clayton State player. The play resulted in a penalty kick that ricocheted off the post for the Lakers.
Clayton State outshot the Tusculum 23-11 in the match. Laker keeper Sean Merfeld had six saves and recorded his second shutout of the season.
