TAMPA, FL – The 18th-ranked Clayton State men's soccer team dropped its second match of the season Saturday, falling 3-0 to 10th-ranked Tampa.
Tampa scored two first half goals and clamped down on defense en route to the victory. Tampa's Dominic Cutrofello scored the first goal in the 21st minute off an assist by Tyler Blackwood. Three minutes later Blackwood was in the middle of another scoring play, this time finishing off a score off a rebound to give the squad a 2-0 early in the match.
Blackwood gave Tampa some insurance in the second half and a 3-0 lead in the 83rd minute off a cross from Jagger Martinez.
Clayton State and Tampa each finished with 13 shots in the match but the Lakers were unable to convert on the offensive end. Laker keeper Sean Merfeld finished with two saves.
The loss drops Clayton State to 2-2 on the young season and the Lakers will return to action on Tuesday, hosting Newberry in a 6 p.m. match.
