#18 Lakers drop heartbreaker fall 3-2 in double overtime
Morrow, GA – The 18th-ranked Clayton State men's soccer team battled to end but came up just a bit short Thursday, dropping a heartbreaker in the Peach Belt/Sunshine State Challenge in Tampa, Fla.
The Lakers fell 3-2 in double overtime in the final seconds of the match. Eckerd's Mark Lee scored with 32 seconds remaining in the match, off assists from Matt Dolan and Nick Jackson, to hand Clayton State its first loss of the year.
"Congratulations to Eckerd," said head coach Pete Petersen. "But we had our chances. We had shot, after shot, after shot and couldn't finish. It was shades of last year's drought, but I promise you the goals will come this year. The guys had good spirit and will be ready to face Tampa."
The loss drops Clayton State to 2-1 on the young season and the Lakers will return to action on Saturday, facing host Tampa, the 10th ranked team in the country.
Eckerd jumped out to an early lead in the match as Lee struck for a goal three minutes in the match heading in a lob by Jackson. The Lakers answered however in the 17th minute as sophomore forward Ad Junuzovic scored his fourth goal of the year to knot the score at one apiece.
Out of the half, Eckerd retook the lead with 33 minutes remaining in the match on unassisted goal by Daniel Lopez on a breakaway. Clayton State battled back to the tied score with 11 minutes remaining to send it to overtime. Junior midfielder Arturo Cruz took a pass from Junuzovic to tie the score at two apiece.
Despite coming up on the short-end, the Lakers controlled much of the play, outshooting Eckerd 22-9 in the match. Senior keeper Matt Sutton finished with two saves in the game.
