Clayton State wins 5-0 again, this time over Queens
MORROW, GA – Early in the 2012 season, the Clayton State men's soccer team is on a streak it would love to continue … two matches and two 5-0 victories.
The Lakers pushed their record to 2-0 on the season Saturday with a convincing 5-0 win in the final game of the Loch Shop Classic, defeating Queens from the Conference Carolinas. Clayton State won 5-0 on Friday over Pfeiffer.
"It's a good start for this young team," said head coach Pete Petersen. "We have a couple of days to regroup and then off to Florida, where we will see where we are, especially playing on the road."
Similar to yesterday, Clayton State jumped out a quick lead again on Saturday, this time in the 15th minute on a goal by freshman midfielder Jonny Evans, off an assist from junior midfielder Arturo Cruz.
The Lakers pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute on an own goal after Queens keeper Simen Walmann misplayed a 50-yard long shot by sophomore forward Ado Junuzovic.
In the second half, junior forward Alhagi Toure exploded for two straight goals to put the game out of reach. His first goal came in the 54th minute, as he took a pass from Cruz, beat the keeper and drilled a shot in the lower left of the net.
Toure added some insurance in the 83rd minute with a goal after a crossing assist by senior Aziz Izmour. Junuzoic closed out the scoring for the Lakers in the 86th minute on a penalty kick, his fourth goal of the season.
Clayton State outshot the Royals 15-3 in the match including a 10-1 differential in the second half. Junior Laker keeper Sean Merfeld recorded the shutout, the team's second of the season.
The Lakers will return to action next week, playing in the Peach Belt/Sunshine State Challenge, hosted by the University of Tampa. Clayton State will play Eckerd on Thursday and Tampa on Saturday in the event.
