No. 13 Clayton State men drop 1-0 heartbreaker at Montevallo
MORROW, Ga. – October 5, 2011 – In what was a much-anticipated showdown between two teams looking to stay alive in the race for the Peach Belt Conference championship, the Clayton State Lakers dropped a tough 1-0 decision at Montevallo on Wednesday.
The defeat snaps a three-game winning steak for Clayton State, ranked 13th in the nation in Division II. The Lakers fall to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the Peach Belt, while Montevallo improves to 7-2-2 and 3-0-1 in the Peach Belt.
Montevallo scored the game's lone goal in the 17th minute as Jackson Tolleson scored in front of the goal off a cross from Shane Howard.
Clayton State had a few chances to get the equalizer in the second half. The biggest came in the 62nd minute when Matty Phillips fed Jonathan Ray for a tremendous header inside the penalty box. However, Montevallo goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway made a diving save to preserve the lead.
The shots were even 10-10 between the two teams. Plus there were a combined five yellow cards issued between the two teams.
Clayton State travels on Saturday for a 3 p.m. non-conference encounter at Tusculum.
