Clayton State currently 13th following first two rounds of Bearcat Golf Classic
GREENWOOD, S.C. – March 26, 2012 – The Clayton State Laker men's golf team got off to a tough start, but gained some needed momentum on Monday on the first day of the Bearcat Golf Classic at the Greenwood Country Club.
Clayton State had rounds of 305 and 296 to stand 13th overall in the 17-team field with a 601. A mere eight strokes separate the teams in eighth to 14th. The Lakers hold a slim one-stroke lead over Belmont Abbey, and trail Coker by one stroke, Montevallo by two strokes, Queens by four strokes, Erskine by five strokes and Armstrong by seven strokes.
USC Aiken has the overall lead after the first day with an impressive 5-under-par 571 (290-281). The Pacers lead Georgia College by 10 strokes.
Individually for Clayton State, junior Chris McManus is currently tied for 26th overall with a 5-over 149. McManus had rounds of 79 and 70 and trails overall leader Joel Dahlenburg from Flagler by 16 strokes. Right behind McManus is freshman Ryan Haskell tied for 32nd at 6-over 150 (73-77), and freshman Will Shenstone tied for 38th at 7-over 151 (76-75).
Rounding out the Laker scoring is senior Clark Nelson (77-81) and freshman Josh Stanley (84-74) both tied for 79 with a 158.
The third and final round of the Bearcat Golf Classic is set for Wednesday at Greenwood Country Club.
