Clayton State stands 10th after first two rounds of Aflac/Cougar Invitational
COLUMBUS, Ga. – October 3, 2011 – The Clayton State Laker men's golf team turned into two solid rounds on the first day of the 2011 Aflac/Cougar Invitational on Monday to stand 10th overall in the event at the Country Club of Columbus.
The Lakers recorded rounds of 300 and 296 and are currently 10th in the 17-team field with a 596. Clayton State holds a one-shot lead over both Carson-Newman and Newberry and a two-stroke lead over both Coker and Florida Tech. The Lakers trail Delta State and Flagler each by a stroke.
No. 3-ranked Lynn leads the Aflac/Cougar Invitational after the first day with a 3-over-par 571, two strokes ahead of No. 4-ranked Barry.
Senior Clark Nelson is the top Clayton State scorer through two rounds with a 5-over 147 (75-72). He recorded one birdie in the opening round, followed by three in the second round and 10 strokes off the overall lead by Barry's Daniel Stapff.
Freshman Will Shenstone is tied for 40th with a 7-over 149 (72-77), while sophomore Tyson Beaupre is tied for 51st with a 9-over 151 (80-71). Beaupre rebounded from a horrendous opening round with five birdies in the second round. Rounding out the Clayton State scoring was freshman Ryan Lort tied for 59th with an 11-over 153, and junior Chris McManus is tied for 72nd with a 156 (80-76).
The third and final round of the Aflac/Cougar Invitational is set for Tuesday at the Country Club of Columbus.
