Clayton State falls 78-73 to UNC Pembroke in Peach Belt play
MORROW, GA – The Clayton State men's basketball team dropped a Peach Belt Conference game Saturday, falling 78-73 to UNC Pembroke at the Athletics & Fitness Center.
Leading 38-37 at halftime, UNC Pembroke went on an 18-7 run in the first six minutes of the second half and never looked back.
The Lakers made a couple of runs in the second half but was never able to get over the hump. A jumper by Charles Shedrick with 12:16 remaining cut the Braves lead to three points, 55-52, but UNCP answered and ran its lead back to double-digits over the next three minutes.
Clayton State made one last run in the final two minutes as forward Juron Dobbs had a dunk to cut the deficit to seven points, 73-66, and then after a UNCP miss, the Lakers had a chance to trim the lead even further but a turnover spoiled its chances. A layup by Quamain Rose off the steal with 43 seconds remaining pushed the lead nine points, 75-66, and sealed the victory for the Braves.
With the loss, the Lakers fall to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in Peach Belt play, while UNC Pembroke improves to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in the league. Clayton State will return to action on Monday, hosting Francis Marion in a 7:30 p.m. game.
Both teams shot well from the field, as Clayton State hit 44 percent (26-of-59) and UNC Pembroke made 45 percent (27-of-60). The game was decided on the boards as the Braves outrebounded the Lakers 43-27 in the contest.
For Clayton State forward Omari Murray finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, followed by Dobbs and center Andrew Bachanov with 14 points apiece. Forward Craig Wong chipped in 10 points.
Forward George Blakeney led UNC Pembroke with 17 points and 12 rebounds, followed by forward Brandon Winford with 15 points and eight boards. Rose finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.
