Clayton State captures impressive 78-59 win over Clark Atlanta Saturday

MORROW, GA – The Clayton State men's basketball picked its fourth win of the season Saturday, knocking off cross-town rival Clark Atlanta 78-59 at the Athletics & Fitness Center.

Clayton State led much of the contest and by over 20 points early in the second half but had to hold off one late Clark Atlanta run before pulling out the comfortable victory.

With 11:35 remaining, Clark Atlanta's James Arnold drilled a 3-pointer to cut the lead to seven points, 50-43. Clayton State maintained its composure though, outscoring the Panthers 12-5 over the next four minutes, pushing its lead back up to 16 points, 64-48, after a steal by guard Sirdarius Henry and a layup by center Tim Budd.

After both teams exchanged baskets, Clayton State closed out the game with an 8-3 run in the final three minutes to secure the victory. A dunk by forward Juron Dobbs in the closing seconds put an exclamation point on the 19-point victory.

Clayton State led 34-21 at intermission and opened the second half with six straight points to take a 21-point lead, 42-21, with 18:01 remaining. A three pointer by forward Charles Shedrick and a layup by forward Omari Murray capped the run. 

With the win, Clayton State improves to 4-1 on the year, while Clark Atlanta drops to 0-4. The Lakers will take off next week for finals before returning to action on Tuesday, December 11th, traveling to face West Georgia. The next home game for the squad will be December 13th, hosting Webber at Mason Barfield Court.

For Clayton State, Murray led the way with 18 points, eight boards, and four blocks. Dobbs finished with 15 points and seven boards.

Guard Johnnel Young led the Panthers with 20 points, followed by James with 19 points.

Clayton State shot 54 percent (33-of-61) from the field, while holding Clark Atlanta to 36 percent (17-of-47) from the floor.
