AUGUSTA, Ga. – November 2, 2011 – The Peach Belt Conference released its men's basketball preseason poll for the 2011-12 season on Tuesday, and the Clayton State Lakers were picked tied for third in the poll.
The Lakers garnered 115 points and one first-place vote to stand tied with three-time defending Peach Belt Conference champion Augusta for third overall. No. 21-ranked Georgia Southwestern was selected as the preseason favorite with 141 points and 10 first-place votes, followed by UNC Pembroke with 118 points and one first-place vote.
Montevallo was picked fifth with 97 points, followed by USC Aiken in sixth with 90. Rounding out the poll was Georgia College (84), Francis Marion (64), Columbus State (58), Armstrong Atlantic (50), Lander (35), North Georgia (34) and Flagler (13). The poll was voted on by the Peach Belt Conference men's head basketball coaches.
Head coach Gordon Gibbons' Lakers return two starters – senior forward Torrin Greene and junior forward Juron Dobbs – from last season's team that finished 19-10 overall and tied for second in the Peach Belt Conference West Division at 10-7. However, Gibbons has loaded the Lakers tremendously this season with a stellar recruiting class.
Headlining the newcomers is three Division I transfers – guards Teondre Williams (Oregon), Anthony Salter (Hawaii) and Tony Dukes (USC Upstate). Also new is senior point guard Bradley Tumer, who comes to Clayton State from fellow Division II program Carson-Newman. Tumer finished fourth in the nation last season in assists. From the junior college ranks, Gibbons has added NJCAA All-American guard Reco Lewis from Waycross, along with post players Tim Budd (Spartanburg Methodist) and Tyrone Black (Iowa Western).
Clayton State opens the 2011-12 regular season on Monday, Nov. 14 at home against Tennessee Temple.
