BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Espousing the old axiom that records are made to be broken, Clayton State women's indoor track & field did just that as three more went down, including one better than a decade old, at the KMS Open on Sunday, February 16.
That decade-plus old record that fell by the wayside would be the 4x200 relay that was last set in 2009 with a mark of 1:47.53 by Keisha Etienne, Jon Taylor, Masiah Hutchinson, Natasha Gass. The group that took it down would be seniors
Jasmine Radford (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and
Nia Elmore (Hinesville, Ga.) along with sophomore
Kayla Williams (Decatur, Ga.) and junior
Chaviya Jackson (Albany, Ga.) as they lowered the mark with a time of 1:47.41.
Three of those individuals would also reset the 4x400 relay record as junior
Na'ilah Allen (McDonough, Ga.) joined Jackson, Elmore and Radford with a time of 4:01.22. That easily outdistanced the previous record of 4:04.75 set by Elmore, Jackson, Radford and current junior
Corta'Nasha Mutcherson (Savannah, Ga.) on February 1, 2019 at the Carolina Challenge.
Not to be left out, Radford would claim her seventh program record, and third indoors, as she posted a time of 25.19 to finish 1-of-19 in the 200-meters. That bested her own mark of 25.39 set in the season opener at the BSC Indoor Icebreaker (12/6/19).
Elmore would add a personal best of 7.69 as she placed 2-of-21 in the 60-meters, coming within one one-hundredths of tying the program record set by teammate Williams earlier this year. The latter would place fourth in that event at 7.87 and Allen would earn a pair of first place finishes. Those would come in the 800-meters (1-of-14, 2:24.72) and 600-meters (1-of-5, 1:42.35) while Jackson rounded things out with a 3-of-8 performance in the 400-meters (59.33).
The Lakers will be right back in action on Saturday, February 22 when they head to the USC Open. That meet will close the indoor regular season and be hosted by the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina.
