More Than 80 Individuals Play in 2017 Cambridge Computer Laker Club Golf Classic

HAMPTON, Ga. – More than 80 golfers were treated to perfect 82-degree weather as they played in the 2017 Cambridge Computer Laker Club Golf Classic at Crystal Lake Golf & Country Club in Hampton, Georgia on Monday, August 28.

All proceeds of the event benefit the ongoing educational pursuits of current and former Clayton State student-athletes, particularly those within reach of completing their degrees.

A traditional best ball scramble, the Classic featured a title sponsor for the first time in Cambridge Computer as well as many dedicated community partners. A number of those were organizations or individuals that have supported the Lakers in previous Classics.

The day also featured a number of special events and prize opportunities, including Hole-in-One contests and long drive contests. For the former, a brand new vehicle from Heritage Cadillac was on the line for anyone that could ace the hole it was on.

The Copter Drop Highlighted the Afternoon Portion of the 2017 Cambridge Computer Laker Club Golf Classic at Crystal Lake Golf & Country Club.

The highlight of the afternoon, however, was the first ever "Copter Drop" in Classic history – and a rarity in the State of Georgia. Beginning shortly after 3 p.m., it featured a full size copter flying over the driving range and dropping a basket of balls over a designated spot.

Individuals could purchase any number of balls for $20 per in the hopes that their ball would be closest to the pin for the top prize. This year that went to Mike Mead, the long-time cross country and track & field coach at Clayton State. The entire drop was also streamed live on Facebook Live.

Teams took to the course in a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m., two hours earlier than in past years, following breakfast sponsored and provided by Bojangles. Among the day's highlights was a full dinner sponsored by Rocky's Café and Pizza followed by the awards ceremony at close of day. The latter also featured a silent auction as well as a raffle for various prizes.

Overall, the Baker Lassiter team of Jay Baker, Lou Denney, Jay Dermer and Whit Young took home first place honors. Each received a substantial first place trophy with the second and third place teams each receiving trophies for their performances.

Among those individuals playing in this year's field were three of the greatest Laker golfers in the history of the program. Will Wilcox, a three-time All-American and member of the PGA Tour, headlined that group and was joined by Alex Vetnar and Keith Egan. Vetnar was an outstanding golfer from 2012-15 while Egan just wrapped up his collegiate career with his second straight individual berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

The Cambridge Computer Laker Club Golf Classic will return to the Crystal Lake family of courses for 2018. Stay tuned to www.ClaytonStateSports.com for announcement of the date of next year's Classic.
