Clayton State 2012 Cross Country Schedule Set

Season opens Sept. 1 at Berry College

MORROW, Ga. – July 18, 2012 – The Clayton State University men’s and women’s cross country schedule should be the most competitive in several years as the Laker teams embark on their 18th campaign.  The season highlight will find both Laker squads competing at the Disney Classic in preparation for the Peach Belt Conference championships and NCAA post-season.

“We have a fairly competitive schedule for the coming cross country season,” said Laker head coach Mike Mead.  “My hope is that the schedule will prepare our bunch to be ready to compete when the big races come around late in the season.  Only time will tell!”

The Lakers will open the season on Sept. 1 when the squad will compete in the Sewanee/Berry Cross Country Invitational in Rome, Ga.  The teams will come right back the following weekend to what amounts to a home meet when the Lakers compete in the Georgia State Invitational at Nash Farm Battlefield in nearby Hampton.

After a weekend off from racing, the Lakers will travel to Montevallo, Ala. on Sept. 22 for the Falcon Classic which will be a course preview for the Peach Belt championship meet later in October.  Following another off-week, the Lakers will travel to the Orlando area for the Disney Classic on Oct. 6 which features some of the top teams in the southeast.

In late October, the Lakers will begin their championship racing season, beginning with the Peach Belt Conference championship meet on Oct. 20.  Both Laker teams will via for a PBC title with the men’s team winning in 2005 while the women’s squad has never won, but finished second last season.

On Nov. 3, Clayton State returns to Charlotte, N.C. for the NCAA Southeast Regionals for qualifying spots to the NCAA championship meet.  Should the Lakers qualify a team or individual, they will advance to the Division II title meet on Nov. 17 in Joplin, Mo.
