Laker track and field fares well at Winston-Salem State meet
Winston-Salem, NC – The Clayton State women’s and men’s track and field teams returned to action on Sunday in the Winston-Salem State Open and posted three event wins, a school record and a NCAA Division II Indoor Championships provisional mark at the meet in Winston-Salem, NC.
Freshman Jessica Matthews led the squad improving her school record in the triple jump by three inches and her standing on the NCAA Division II provisional list. Her jump of 38-feet 7-1/2 inches won the meet, her first win in a collegiate competition.
Clayton State’s distance medley relay team of senior Paige Galvin, junior Gisele Javois, junior Sam Walling and sophomore Racquel Valadez won with a time of 13:00.14, which ranks 10th on the NCAA Division II performance list this season. Galvin also came back and placed third in the 3,000m run with a time of 10:37.92, just .12 seconds off her school record in the event.
Senior Monique Belmudes and freshman Taylor Galvin placed second and fourth, respectively in the mile with times of 5:34.08 and 5:40.21. Valadez finished fifth in the 3,000m with a time of 10:54.49.
On the men’s side, senior Ayrton Azcue had the best effort. He led the distance medley relay team to a third place finish by setting a blistering pace of 3:06 for the 1200m leg and came back later in the meet to win the mile run with a time of 4:17.48 and just missed the NCAA provisional time for the event by a quarter of a second.
Along with Azcue, senior Shelby Russell, junior Charles Anderson and freshman Job Kemboi ran on the relay team that finished with an overall time of 10:37.93, which is the 10th fastest in NCAA Division II so far this year.
Clayton State’s 4x400m relay team of sophomore Dinero Nicholas, Russell, Anderson and junior Wilson Louima placed second with a time of 3:31.84. Anderson placed fifth in the 800m run with a time of 2:00.68.
The Lakers will return to action on Monday, Jan. 28th in a meet in Birmingham, AL, the Emory Crossplex Invitational.
