Clayton State track and field to compete in Winston-Salem State meet this weekend

MORROW, GA – The Clayton State women’s and men’s track and field teams will return to action on Sunday competing in a meet hosted by Winston-Salem State University.

The meet will be held at the JDL Fast Track facility in Winston-Salem, NC, which is in its second year of operation. The event begins with field events at 9 a.m. and running events at 10 a.m.  Clayton State will open the meet with teams in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) at 10:40 a.m.

“This will be an interesting meet in the fact we’ll see who trained over the break,” said Mead. “My hope is everyone will improve on their efforts in December.  Several have come back in terrific condition while others slipped a little.  I’m looking forward to seeing how we compete, particularly in the triple jump, DMR and distance events.  We’re still young and raw in the sprints, but the kids are working hard at practice.”

The women’s team will add a newcomer to this meet in transfer Jozlyn Varnedoe, joining the Lakers from Huntingdon College in Alabama. She is originally from Lithonia, GA, and will compete in the hurdles and sprints.

Clayton State’s women’s and men’s squads have runners ranked among the nation’s best as freshman Jessica Matthews is currently ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division II in the women’s triple jump. Senior Paige Galvin is currently ranked No. 38 in the women’s 3,000m run.

On the men’s side, Laker junior Charles Anderson is currently ranked No. 33 in D-II in the men’s 800m. Also during the holiday break, Laker senior Ayrton Azcue ran a 3,000m time (8:27.80) in Spain that would rank him No. 5 on the current D-II list for the event.  Azcue will be running the mile on Sunday in an attempt for an NCAA provisional time.

After this weekend’s meet, the Lakers will return to action on Monday, Jan. 28th in a meet in Birmingham, AL, the Emory Crossplex Invitational.
