Peach Belt Basketball Tournament brackets released
Morrow, GA – The Clayton State women’s and men’s basketball teams qualified for the Peach Belt Conference Basketball Tournament later this week, and the brackets for the event were released Saturday evening.
Eight teams, the top four teams from both the East and West Divisions of the conference, qualify for the PBC Tournament Championships, which will be held at the Frank G. Lumpkin Center on the campus of Columbus State University March 7-10th.
The Clayton State women’s team, the 2012-13 PBC regular season champions, will open the tournament as the top seed from the West and will face Armstrong on Thursday at 5 p.m. The No. 1 ranked Lakers closed the regular season undefeated for the second time in the last three years, while capturing their third straight conference title. The Lakers will be looking for their fourth tournament title since 2005.
The winner of Thursday’s Clayton State and Armstrong game will advance to Saturday’s 4 p.m. semifinals and face the winner of Columbus State and USC Aiken. The finals for the PBC Women’s Tournament Championship will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m.
On the men’s side, Clayton State (13-13) will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed from the West Division and face the No. 1 seed from the East in USC Aiken. Tipoff for the game at the Lumpkin Center will be 1 p.m. on Friday.
The Lakers finished in a tie for the third spot in the West but lost the tiebreaker to Georgia Southwestern. The 2013 PBC Tournament will be the last for legendary Clayton State head coach Gordon Gibbons, who announced he will resign at season’s end. Clayton State and USC Aiken met on Jan. 16 in Aiken with the Pacers winning by 11 points.
The winner of Friday’s Clayton State and Aiken game will advance to Saturday’s semifinals and face the winner of North Georgia and Armstrong at 6 p.m. The finals for the PBC Men’s Tournament Championship will be held on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
